The Studio.
While I was raising my kids, I wanted a studio more than anything. Not a hallway or a small bedroom but a real studio— a NYC studio actually. When they went off to college and my husband and I moved into the city, I actually got one! In 17 years there I had a series of studios and each time eventually needing to move farther afield until it didn’t make sense to travel to areas I couldn’t stay in after dark. So I went back to a small space in our apartment.
When it was inevitable that we were moving out of the city — my husband had had it— I started dreaming of a house with a studio … maybe a barn ! I cut a photo out of a magazine — World Interiors, I’m pretty sure….
I found this clipping recently when I was cleaning a drawer. I had cut it out of a magazine a decade earlier as an aspirational photo - for my ideal workspace, my dream studio.
Six years later, I was going through some paper piles (I throw out nothing) and I came across that photo! There it was! I was sitting in an almost identical space: a large square room, high ceilings, large paned windows. There must be magic – REALLY! I love my studio and practically live in it.
My dream became my reality!!
